Curriculum

The LATA curriculum takes you through the fundamentals of Argentine Tango to create a strong foundation, technically and musically. Please keep in mind that the material in each series is very dense, and most students take each session/semester several times.

TANGO 100

An introduction to Tango concepts, connection, musicality, and movement. This Program is for anyone who's never danced Tango before, but also for the experienced Tango dancer to go back and clean up their basics.

Tango 101: La Salida Basica

Studying  “La Salida Basica”, or “The Basic Exit”, which is the first of several classic figures designed over decades to develop strong skills in the dance. We'll also introduce five of the most common steps used on the dance floor.

  • Week 1:  The Basic Exit
  • Week 2:  The Walk
  • Week 3:  Back Crosses
  • Week 4:  Rock Steps

Tango 102: El Ocho

More physical drilling of the basic tango movements, followed by an exploration of the second classic figure, “El Ocho”, or forward ochos from the cross. The last part of class focuses on the most useful Milonguero variations based on the inherent rhythm in the ocho cortado.

  • Week 1:  El Ocho (with Pasadas)
  • Week 2:  El Ocho Cortado
  • Week 3:  The Club Style Basic
  • Week 4:  The Club Style Basic with Pasada

Tango 103: La Parada

  • Week 1:  La Parada (w/abanico)
  • Week 2:  Walk to Parada
  • Week 3:  La Media Luna
  • Week 4:  La Media Luna with The Club Style Basic

Tango 104: Back Ochos

Continuing with drills and physical training, then working on Back 8s, or the classic back ocho/parada combination. This is followed by a thorough treatment on bridging the gap between the Milonguero and Salon aesthetics with regards to ochos in general.

  • Week 1:  Back 8s
  • Week 2:  Back Crosses with a Parada
  • Week 3:  Back Crosses with a Turn to the Left (Club Style)
  • Week 4:  Back Crosses with a Turn to the Right (la Media Luna)

TANGO 105: MUSICALITY

Continuing with drills and physical training, then working on gaining a greater understanding of the musicality. This is followed by a thorough treatment on bridging the gap between the Milonguero and Salon aesthetics with regards to ochos in general.

  • Week 1: Structure & Phrasing
  • Week 2: Internalizing Rhythms
  • Week 3: Catching a Break
  • Week 4: Unlocking Your Creativity
Dancing is not just getting up painlessly, like a leaf blown on the wind; Dancing is when you tear your heart out and rise out of your body to hang suspended between the worlds.
